TAWA members gather every spring to evaluate all that's new in passenger cars, minivans and performance SUVs. 

The event gives Texas journalists the opportunity to drive nearly every new car on the market. 

This year marked the first time TAWA offered individual categories for each class of vehicle ? 18 categories in all, ranging from sub-compact vehicles to super cars (over 450 hp). 

A total of 49 journalists attended and drove 58 cars from various manufacturers at the event.

Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, and SRT brand vehicles won significant accolades this year at the Texas Auto Roundup hosted by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA). After a day of demanding driving at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas, journalists voted on their favorites and the Chrysler Group secured eight of the possible 18 awards - the most of any participating manufacturer at the event.

Chrysler 300 Connects With Editors, Claims Prize

The 2012 Chrysler 300 picked up some hardware Wednesday for its software ? and other components of its Uconnect Touch in-vehicle connectivity system.

Connected World magazine has named the 300 "Connected Car of the Year" among mid-size offerings. President/Editorial Director Peggy Smedley and Chief Editor Mike Carrozzo and presented the award here at the New York International Auto Show to Marios Zenios, Head of Connectivity and Infotainment, and Klaus Busse, Head of Interior Design.

"Sophisticated touch controls and voice-controlled options with Uconnect Touch enable you to, among other features, call up your favorite playlist, for example, simply by saying the words," the magazine says in its March/April issue.


Connected World also touts Uconnect's ability to deliver Wi-Fi capability at 3G broadband speeds. "The Chrysler 300 is prepared to carry on the carmaker's philosophy of building revolutionary cars with innovation and forward-thinking engineering," the magazine adds.

On accepting the award, Zenios said: "It reinforces our emphasis on user-friendly interface development."

Zenios also promised Chrysler's new, next-generation in-vehicle connectivity system ? Uconnect Access ? will deliver more of the kind of capability that resonated with Connected World's editors.

Uconnect Access was unveiled here in the '13 SRT Viper. It connects vehicle occupants to emergency services and provides more information and entertainment with enhanced graphics.

But the system retains Uconnect's trademark user-friendly interface, which belies the system's sophistication. "It's not easy to design something simple," Zenios added.

Chrysler 300, Dart make Ward's Top Interiors

The 2013 Dodge Dart and the 2012 Chrysler 300 Luxury Series sedan were chosen for "Wards 10 Best Interiors" list for 2012. WardsAuto World editors picked the winners after evaluating 40 vehicles. All of the contenders for the annual award were completely new or significantly upgraded for the 2012 or 2013 model years. The winners will be honored May 17, 2012 at the WardsAuto Interiors Conference in Dearborn, Michigan.

The year may be young, but Dodge brand vehicles are continuing to gain momentum, earning recognition from both new car buyers and the media, alike.

On Wednesday, Feb. 8, the editors of MotorWeek presented the "Driver's Choice, Best Large Utility" for the three-row Dodge Durango SUV (shared with Jeep Grand Cherokee) at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.

MotorWeek has judged the best new cars and trucks of the year for the past 31 years. Its annual Drivers' Choice Awards looks at vehicles from a buyer's point of view, including priorities such as value and reliability, while also taking the latest trends and innovations into consideration. An episode of MotorWeek featuring the Durango and other award winners is scheduled to air Feb. 11 on PBS and on Discovery's Velocity Network Feb. 21.

The Dodge brand posted a 29 percent sales increase in January, its best January since 2008 and its eighth-consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. Wrangler wins two awards from Kelley Blue Book

Jeep picked up two "Best Resale Value" awards from Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com. The new 2012 Jeep Wrangler is Number 1 in the Top 10 cars with Best Resale Value and has also been named Best Resale Value in its class by For the second consecutive year. The Wrangler will retain an estimated 68.0% of its original price at 36 months and 55.0% after five years.

"Jeep had one of the better year-over-year improvements with a 4.1 percentage point gain in its 60-month residual value for 2012," said Eric Ibara, director of residual value consulting for Kelley Blue Book. "Particularly the Wrangler, among this year's top-10 list, has been a steady performer, consistently racking up high values.
